Water management: solutions, innovations and opportunities for a sustainable future

How can Romania's water infrastructure become more efficient, smarter, and more resilient?

In this edition of the “Industry Talks” series, we speak with Dorin Delca, Business Director at WATT UNIT, about the challenges facing Romania's water infrastructure and the solutions that can accelerate its modernization.

In the interview, we explore digitalization, automation, energy efficiency, and the role of technologies such as SCADA, smart sensors, and artificial intelligence in transforming the way water resources are managed.

1

What is the biggest hidden challenge facing Romania's water infrastructure?

The biggest challenge is not just the age of the infrastructure, but also the lack of digitalization and real-time visibility into how these systems operate. Many facilities operate without continuous monitoring, meaning that losses, high energy consumption, or equipment failures are identified too late. Modern infrastructure needs automation, data, and continuous control to become more efficient and resilient.

2

What major risk related to water resource management should concern us over the next 10 years?

Climate change will intensify both periods of drought and extreme weather events, placing increasing pressure on existing infrastructure. At the same time, the energy consumption required for water treatment and distribution will become an increasingly important economic factor. That is why investments in smart, energy-efficient, and easily monitored systems will be essential to ensuring a reliable water supply.

3

What technology could have the greatest impact on the way we manage water resources?

Digitalization is the technology with the greatest potential to transform the way we manage water resources. Solutions based on SCADA, PLCs, smart sensors, and remote monitoring enable facilities to be operated based on real-time data rather than relying solely on reactive interventions. These technologies reduce consumption, optimize processes, and improve infrastructure reliability, giving operators greater control over their systems.

Based on our experience with water treatment and distribution projects, the greatest transformation comes from integrating automation, SCADA systems, and smart electrical control panels into a unified architecture. When electrical design, automation, and monitoring work together, operators can reduce energy consumption, anticipate failures, and optimize processes in real time.

Looking ahead, we believe the next natural step is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into these digital ecosystems. We aim to advance this direction by developing solutions that use AI for data analysis, predictive maintenance, automated process optimization, and decision support for operators. We are convinced that combining automation, digitalization, and AI will contribute to more efficient, reliable, and sustainable water infrastructure.

How does Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec contribute to promoting innovative solutions for sustainable water management?

Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec provides a platform where manufacturers, system integrators, designers, operators, and authorities can discuss practical solutions and see technologies in action. We believe that events like this help accelerate the adoption of innovation, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience, and contribute to the development of more efficient and sustainable projects.

What value did your participation in previous editions bring, and what motivated you to return as an exhibitor at Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec 2027?

Participating in the previous edition gave us the opportunity to engage directly with end users, designers, system integrators, and partners in the water and energy infrastructure sectors. We strengthened existing relationships, initiated new collaborations, and had the opportunity to showcase projects and solutions developed by WATT UNIT.

During the previous edition, we noticed growing interest in integrated solutions, where electrical distribution, automation, and digitalization are approached as a unified system. This is also why we are returning in 2027: we want to share the experience we have gained through complex water and energy projects and contribute to the development of safer, more efficient, and more sustainable infrastructure.

Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec is one of the most relevant meeting points for industry professionals. It is where technical dialogue turns into partnerships, and where integrated solutions for automation, electrical distribution, and infrastructure digitalization can create real value for future investments.

Solutions that are transforming water management
deserve to be seen.

If your company's portfolio includes technologies and solutions for water management, treatment, monitoring, and distribution, Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec 2027 is where they can reach operators, authorities, engineers, investors, and industry partners.
