Waste management: challenges, opportunities and the road ahead for
the next decade

How can we accelerate the transition to a circular economy through education, collaboration and community engagement? What role do organisations, businesses and citizens play in building a more efficient and responsible waste management system?

In this edition of our “Industry Insights” series, we speak with Alexandra Țuțuianu, Operations Director at ECOTECA, about the importance of environmental education, the development of high-impact projects, and the collaboration between the public sector, private companies and civil society in achieving sustainability goals.

We invite you to read the interview and discover how education, partnerships and active engagement can contribute to the development of a circular economy and a more efficient, sustainable waste management system.

1

What is the biggest challenge facing the waste management industry today?

The greatest challenge is the lack of robust and verifiable data on waste streams. Many decisions — by waste operators, public authorities and even in the development of national policies — are still based on estimates rather than on real, systematically collected and traceable data.

This issue is particularly evident in areas such as textile and construction waste, where waste volumes are increasing rapidly while collection, sorting and reporting systems have not kept pace.

Without traceability, we cannot accurately measure impact, identify losses within the system or develop effective public policies. That is why, through its projects, ECOTECA supports solutions built on real data rather than assumptions.

2

What is the greatest opportunity Romania can capitalise on?

Romania has the opportunity to build a waste management system based on digitalisation and traceability from the ground up, without repeating all the stages and mistakes made by more mature markets.

There are several waste streams that have only recently become part of the public agenda, meaning that both the institutional and technological infrastructure are still being developed. This is the right time to integrate digital monitoring tools, strengthen environmental education within communities and foster closer collaboration between public authorities, businesses and specialised organisations.

3

What is your prediction for the waste management sector over the next 10 years?

We expect data-driven traceability to become the industry standard, supported both by national and European legislation and by the growing demand for transparency from businesses and consumers alike.

Waste streams such as textiles and construction materials, which currently receive limited public attention, will become strategic priorities. Responsibility will need to be assumed and monitored throughout the entire value chain — from waste generation and collection to recovery or final disposal.

At the same time, environmental education will gradually evolve from isolated initiatives into a permanent component of the system. Today's children and young people will become the adults who naturally apply the principles of the circular economy.

Through initiatives such as ScoalaEco.ro, CumStam.ro and BibliotecaDeMediu.ro, ECOTECA is already working towards that future.

What types of solutions and technologies should not be missing from Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec 2027?

We would like to see a stronger focus on digital traceability solutions, including platforms and sensors that enable waste to be tracked from its point of generation through to its final recovery, while providing authorities and operators with real-time access to relevant data.

Technologies dedicated to emerging waste streams, such as textile and construction waste, are equally important, as there are still relatively few mature, scalable solutions available in these areas. We also believe that community engagement and environmental education tools should play a prominent role, because even the most advanced technologies cannot deliver results without informed and engaged people.

In this context, we hope that the 2027 edition will continue the dialogue launched this year during the “Efficiency and Traceability in Waste Management” conference by showcasing practical implementation examples and measurable results, not just concepts.

Solutions that transform the industry
deserve to be seen.

If your company develops technologies, equipment or solutions for waste management and the circular economy, Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec 2027 is where you can showcase them to public authorities, waste operators, investors and strategic industry partners.
