The Future of Energy: from generation to storage and smart energy management
| |
What will the energy market look like over the next decade? What opportunities lie ahead for Romania, and which technologies will redefine the way we generate, consume and store energy?
In this edition of our “Industry Insights” series, we speak with Theodor Ioannidis, CEO of Ecobat Energy, about the direction in which the energy sector is evolving and the pivotal role that innovation, energy storage and collaboration across the industry will play in shaping its future.

What is the biggest opportunity Romania is missing today in the energy sector?
| |
Romania has made significant progress in expanding its renewable energy generation capacity, yet it has not fully capitalised on the potential of energy storage.
Over the past few years, hundreds of thousands of photovoltaic systems have been installed, but many were designed without battery storage or a clear energy management strategy. We are already seeing the consequences: grid overvoltage, curtailed generation and electricity being produced precisely when its market value is at its lowest.
The greatest opportunity is to look beyond energy generation and focus on intelligent generation, storage and energy management. Those who invest in this direction will gain a significant competitive advantage in the years ahead.

What change could completely transform the energy market over the next five years?
| |
I believe we will witness a shift from the concept of the “prosumer” to that of the “energy manager”.
It will no longer be enough to know how many kilowatts your solar panels generate. What will matter is when you produce energy, when you consume it, and when you choose to store it — or even sell it. Dynamic tariffs, intelligent battery storage, energy management systems and the integration of electric vehicles will become standard features in both homes and businesses.
Within the next five years, the difference between a photovoltaic system and an intelligent energy system will become increasingly clear.

What is your prediction for the energy sector by 2036?
| |
By 2036, I believe batteries will become a standard component of every photovoltaic system, just as inverters are considered indispensable today. We will see much closer integration between energy generation, storage, electric vehicle charging, heat pumps and smart energy management solutions.
At the same time, the role of installers will evolve. They will no longer simply install equipment; they will design and optimise complete energy ecosystems.
From our perspective, success will belong to companies that invest simultaneously in technology, services, technical support and the continuous training of their partners.

Events such as Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec play a vital role because they bring together manufacturers, distributors, installers, public authorities and end users. Technology is evolving rapidly, and exhibitions like this enable participants to discover new solutions, compare equipment, understand market trends and engage directly with industry experts.
At the same time, these events help educate the market, and education is perhaps the most important investment we can make to ensure a successful and sustainable energy transition.

What value did participating in previous editions bring to Ecobat Energy, and what motivated you to return as an exhibitor at Green Energy Expo & Romenvirotec 2027?
| |
Participating in previous editions gave us the opportunity to strengthen relationships with our partners and gain first-hand insight into the challenges faced by installers and system integrators. It also allowed us to showcase our latest technologies, exchange knowledge with industry professionals, reinforce existing partnerships and establish new ones.
We are returning in 2027 because the market is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and we believe it is essential to be present where the future of energy is being shaped. We will showcase new solutions and technologies for the residential, commercial and industrial sectors, while continuing to deliver on the mission that has guided us from the very beginning: providing our partners not only with high-quality products, but also with technical support, expertise and the confidence of having a trusted long-term partner.
